A few days ago it was reported that tea workers in Bangladesh will enjoy a pay rise. The climb is from 82 takas to 102 takas. That is, a little more than 1 euro per day for eight hours of work. To help a little to the sustainability of our project in Giasnogor, we have decided to set up a small fish farm. We have brought 150 fish from our neighbor's pond and we hope that from time to time we can feed the boys and girls of the school fish without having to buy it, as it is quite expensive. Of course this is not going to get us out of trouble, but it is one more droplet in our effort to take advantage of the renewable resources we have at our disposal, such as the planting of black pepper, the vegetable garden, the dry wood for the kitchen and the sale of trees that storms throw down. As you see in the pictures, the fish have excited our students, who spend their dead hours watching them. And thanks to Bro. Alex, who has made it possible.</div>

Para ayudar un poco a la sostenibilidad de nuestro proyecto en Giasnogor, hemos decidido poner una pequeña piscifactoría. Hemos traído 150 peces del estanque de un vecino nuestro y esperamos que de vez en cuando podamos dar de comer pescado a los chicos y chicas del colegio sin tener que comprarlo, ya que es bastante caro. Por supuesto esto no os va a sacar de apuros, pero es una gotita más en nuestro esfuerzo de aprovechar los recursos renovables que tenemos a nuestro alcance, como la plantación de pimienta negra, la huerta de verduras, la leña seca para la cocina y la venta de los árboles que nos tiran las tormentas. Como ves en las fotos, los peces han entusiasmado a nuestros alumnos y alumnas, que se pasan las horas muertas mirándolos. Y gracias al H. Alex que ha dirigido la operación.</div>

It's being cold in Bangladesh. Temperature’s been unusually low for three weeks now. At some point in the country, 2.8ºC has been recorded, the lowest temperature in 50 years. Neither the houses nor the clothes of the people are prepared for this. As there is no heating system, the temperature is the same inside and outside the houses. Children come to school in the middle of a thick fog at 8:30 in the morning. And some, like the one in the photo, have an anorak but do not have shoes. There you have him with his books, his hood, but in flip flops. We warm them up with some physical exercises before entering class and then, in the classroom, the human warmth makes the thing more bearable. But these children got merit who leave their homes with just a cup of tea in their stomach, in the midst of the cold and fog, and have to cross at least one jury bridge to come to study.</div>

Los niños vienen al colegio en medio de una espesa niebla a las 8:30 de la mañana. Y algunos, como el de la foto tienen un anorak pero no tienen zapatos. Ahí lo tienes con sus libros, su capucha, pero en chancletas. Les hacemos entrar en calor con unos ejercicios físicos antes de entrar en clase y luego, ya en el aula, el calor humano hace la cosa más llevadera. Pero ya tienen mérito estos niños que salen de sus casas con sólo una taza de té en el estómago, en medio del frío y la niebla, y tienen que atravesar al menos un puente de fortuna para venir a estudiar.</div>

Today, exactly one year ago, the first student entered through the gate of St. Marcellin School in Giasnogor, Bangladesh. A highly emotional moment that seemed like the culmination of a dream, but in fact it was the beginning of a new adventure. 97 boys and girls, belonging to 3 religions and 22 different ethnic groups, began a journey, accompanied by 10 educators belonging to 3 religions, 3 nationalities and 4 ethnic groups. The mission is difficult, to say it softly. These kids come mostly from tea plantations, they do not have electricity in their homes, live in adobe or corrugated rooms, have had a primary education more than precarious and, this we have seen later, come from not only poor but also broken families. It was clear that the objective was not so much the academic results, as to strengthen their self-esteem, offer them a safe and cheerful place without violence, give them the basic principles, reinforce their dignity, and integrate the different social groups. We are talking about a group with a high percentage of school dropouts (up to 70% in some schools). Many of those who have passed have already gone further than their parents in education. Well, with everything and with that, I think we're getting it. For those who like numbers, I will tell you that we have lost only 5 students during the year; 20 will repeat class to face the rest of their education with guarantees; and 72 have passed. In a few days we will start again with twice as many students, an educational team reinforced with several more members and a crazy desire to achieve what we pursue. Someone said that if you are clear about the why, then the how-when-where are not impossible. And we, with God's help, are clear about why. We are in the hands of God.</div>

Hoy hace exactamente un año que el primer alumno entró por la puerta de la escuela St. Marcellin en Giasnogor, Bangladesh. Un momento altamente emotivo que parecía la culminación de un sueño, pero en realidad fue el comienzo de una nueva aventura. 97 niños y niñas, pertenecientes a 3 religiones y 22 grupos étnicos diferentes comenzaron una andadura, acompañados por 10 educadores pertenecientes a 3 religiones, 3 nacionalidades y 4 etnias. La misión es difícil, por emplear un término suave. Estos chavales provienen en su mayoría de plantaciones de té, no tienen luz eléctrica en sus casas, viven en habitaciones de adobe o uralita, han tenido una educación primaria más que precaria y, esto lo hemos visto después, provienen de familias no sólo pobres sino también rotas. Estaba claro que el objetivo no eran tanto los resultados académicos, como fortalecer su autoestima, ofrecerles un lugar seguro y alegre sin violencia, darles los principios básicos, reforzar su dignidad, integrar los diferentes grupos sociales. Estamos hablando de un colectivo con un altísimo porcentaje de abandono escolar (hasta 70% en algunas escuelas). Muchos de los que han aprobado el curso han llegado ya más lejos que sus padres en la educación. Pues bien, con todo y con eso, creo que lo vamos consiguiendo. A los que les gustan los números, les diré que sólo hemos perdido 5 alumnos durante el año; 20 van a repetir curso para encarar el resto de su educación con garantías; y 72 han aprobado. Dentro de unos días volveremos a empezar con el doble de alumnos, un equipo educativo reforzado con varios miembros más y unas ganas locas de conseguir lo que perseguimos. Alguien dijo que si tienes claro el por qué, los cómo-cuándo-dónde no son imposibles. Y nosotros, con la ayuda de Dios, tenemos claro el por qué. Estamos en las manos de Dios.</div>

Today we closed the academic year at our school. The first year of our journey. There has been a great party with dances, songs and sketches. Then a meeting with the parents and the expected delivery of final results. All with very good vibes, or rather, with an excellent spirit. The party began with the national anthem, sung by all, and followed by a Muslim, a Hindu and a Christian prayer. From then on, everything has been common: the performances have been the faithful reflection of our daily work: boys and girls, tribal and Bengali, Muslim, Hindu and Christian dancing and singing the same songs, reciting together the same poems, taking the same snacks, playing the same games. The school results have been as good as they could be, being realistic; students coming from poor, isolated and very modest elementary schools cannot shine academically the first year. We already knew that, and it was not our main goal. On January 2 we started walking and today we have concluded aware of our limitations and our achievements. We are small, we are poor, but we are a small laboratory, a small light that shouts to the world that peace, harmony and coexistence between different people is possible. Training good citizens and good believers is possible. Forming in values is possible. That is why we congratulate ourselves and thank God.</div>

Hoy ha acabado el curso en nuestra escuela. El primer año de nuestra andadura. Ha habido una fiesta estupenda con bailes, canciones y comedias. Luego una reunión con los padres y después la esperada entrega de notas y resultados. Todo con muy buen rollo, o mejor dicho, con un excelente espíritu. La fiesta comenzó con el himno nacional, cantado por todos, y seguido por una oración musulmana, otra hindú y otra cristiana. A partir de ahí todo ha sido común: las actuaciones han sido el fiel reflejo de nuestro quehacer cotidiano: niños y niñas, tribales y bengalíes, musulmanes, hindúes y cristianos bailando y cantando las mismas canciones, recitando juntos las mismas poesías, tomándose el mismo aperitivo, jugando los mismos juegos. Los resultados escolares han sido todo lo buenos que podían ser, siendo realistas; alumnos que vienen de pobres, aisladas y modestísimas escuelas primarias no pueden brillar académicamente el primer año. Eso ya lo sabíamos, y además no era nuestro objetivo. El 2 de enero echamos a andar y hoy hemos concluido conscientes de nuestras limitaciones y nuestros logros. Somos pequeños, somos pobres, pero somos un pequeño laboratorio, una pequeña luz que grita al mundo que la paz, la armonía y la convivencia entre distintos es posible. Formar buenos ciudadanos y buenos creyentes es posible. Formar en valores es posible. Por ello nos felicitamos y le damos gracias a Dios.<br />

When in the morning Sheik leaves home with his backpack, his grandparents believe that he comes to school; but most of the days he does not arrive here. His father disappeared from home one day. His mother went to live with another man. The child stayed with the grandparents who are in years and also sick. Sheik has no one who cares for him, no one to help him grow. The street is his teacher.<br />
To the mother of Akter, one of our students, it is better for the girl to play truant. Her husband also left and was never heard from again. She has to work 8 hours a day picking tea leaves. At home, Akter has a small legion of brothers, sisters and cousins who must be cared for, cleaned and fed. So half of the days she does not come to school.<br />
We are working hard to make sure that our students do not stop coming to school. We visit them in their homes, we talk to their parents or whoever is in charge of them, we try to convince them of the importance of coming to school, to learn things, to open their eyes to the world beyond the small horizon of this rural, forgotten, depressed area. We try to make the school a friendly place. We are not doing badly so far; out of 97 students only three or four have stopped coming. This number is much higher in other schools in the area, up to 35% in some cases. I hope we will succeed, for the sake of these children and their families. With God's help.</div>

Cuando por las mañanas Sheik sale de casa con su mochila, sus abuelos creen que viene a la escuela; pero la mayor parte de los días no llega. Su padre desapareció de casa un día. Su madre se fue a vivir con otro. El niño se quedó con los abuelos que están entrados en años y además enfermos. Sheik no tiene quien le quiera, no quien le exija y le ayude a crecer. La calle es su maestra.<br />
A la madre de Akter, una de nuestras alumnas, le viene mejor que la niña haga novillos. Su marido también se fue y nunca más se supo de él. Ella tiene que trabajar 8 horas diarias recogiendo hojas de té. Akter tiene en casa una pequeña legión de hermanos, hermanas, primos y primas a los que hay que cuidar, limpiar y alimentar. Así que la mitad de los días no viene al colegio.<br />
Nos estamos esforzando mucho en que nuestros alumnos y alumnas no dejen de venir al colegio. Les visitamos en sus casas, hablamos con sus padres o quienes estén a cargo de ellos/as, les intentamos convencer de lo importante que es que vengan, que aprendan, que abran los ojos al mundo que hay más allá del pequeño horizonte de esta zona rural olvidada y deprimida. Intentamos hace de la escuela un lugar amable y amistoso. No nos va mal del todo; de 97 alumnos sólo tres o cuatro han dejado de venir. Este número es muchísimo mayor en otras escuelas de la zona, hasta el 35% en algunos casos. Ojalá lo consigamos, por el bien de estos niños y el de sus familias. Con la ayuda de Dios.</div>

Unequal power relations exist between workers and management in the Tea Plantations of Bangladesh. The British introduced a hierarchal relationship in the tea gardens where managers expect worship from workers. Interviewed workers reported that the manager, usually called Babu, considers them to be lower class people who are to serve the manager. One worker said: We born and brought up in a jungle. We have no class, no dignity, no desire and no hope. We are only to carry out the order of Babu. To them we are untouchable. They never enter in our house or take a glass of water from our house. Even they do not sit together with us. The reason is that it may decrease their social position. This attitude reflects in all dealings with us. The country is independent but we the tea plantation workers are not independent, we are leading a captive life under the custody of our employers.</div>

Existen relaciones de poder desiguales entre los trabajadores y la administración en las plantaciones de té de Bangladesh. Los británicos introdujeron una relación jerárquica en las plantaciones, donde los gerentes esperan una especie de adoración por parte de los trabajadores. Today our school has participated in a human chain organised by Pahar Rakkha o Unnoyon Society (Hills care and development society) in favor of the Rohingyas. Among our students many are Muslims and many are tribal. And so, they feel identified with the suffering of these paperlees, rightless and landless people being evicted from their place in Myanmar. </div>

For a week now and until mid-August, we have with us Sandra, Alberto, Javier and Estíbaliz. Four SED volunteers who have dared to come to Giasnogor to help us and help themselves. They are our first volunteers and they will not certainly be the last. Volunteering is to save yourself from the boredom that lurks, to save yourself from the vulgar, from the material, and to feel that you are useful, that you are solidarity, that you are loving, that you are important, that you are an immense aspirin, and whoever tastes you, heals.</div>

Responding to the invitation of the Bishop of our diocese, Mgr. Bejoy, we have given a seminar on Child Protection to headmasters and teachers in Catholic schools in the diocese. It was on May 4, with attendance of 60 people, including Mgr. Bejoy, who followed with attention every moment of the seminar. We Marists are honored because the diocese has thought of us for this work, and we are also delighted to share what little or much we know about this crucial issue, which is to make our institutions a safe place for children. The seminar included the following topics: who is a child, kinds of abuse, punishments, child protection policy, child protection procedures and code of conduct. The work to be done in Bangladesh is immense, even within Catholic institutions, but the active disposition shown by the audience is a ray of hope.</div>

Respondiendo a la invitación del Obispo de nuestra diócesis, Mon. Bejoy, hemos impartido un seminario sobre Protección del Menor a directores y profesores de las escuelas católicas de la diócesis. Ha sido el día 4 de mayo, con asistencia de 60 personas, incluyendo a Mon. Bejoy, que siguió con atención todos los momentos del seminario. Los Maristas nos sentimos honrados porque la diócesis haya pensado en nosotros para este trabajo, y a la vez estamos encantados de compartir lo poco o mucho que sabemos de este tema tan crucial, que no es otro que hacer de nuestras instituciones un lugar seguro para los niños. El seminario incluyó los temas siguientes: quién es un niño, clases de abusos, castigos, política de protección del menor, protocolos de actuación y código de conducta. El trabajo por hacer en Bangladesh es inmenso, incluso dentro de las instituciones católicas, pero la activa disposición mostrada por los asistentes es un rayo de esperanza.</div>

"These children should be in 3rd grade, not 6th!” repeated several teachers at our weekly meeting. It is well known that teachers often exaggerate the difficulties and complain about the low level of their students, but in this case is real. The first hundred boys and girls who populate our newly opened school in Giasnogor carry out with them a more than poor academic baggage. They come from the tea plantations or the neighboring market; they have had a primary education full of deficiencies. Their reading and writing level, as I said at the beginning by quoting teachers, is two or three years lower than it should be. And, thank God, after two months, we have had only three cases of school drop-out (in other schools it is up to 75%). But I would also like to put myself in the shoes of these boys and girls ... It is not easy for them to come to school; in the photo you see only one of the topographical obstacles they must pass each day to come. But there are more obstacles: they lack the least intellectual stimulation on the part of their families, they live in houses without electricity, without water, without furniture. And yet, little by little, we are trying to convince them that they can do it, that they can reach the end of their studies, that they are no less than other boys and girls of their age in other parts of Bangladesh and the world. With God's help…</div>

“¡Estos niños deberían estar en 3º, no en 6º!”, repiten varios profesores en nuestra reunión semanal. Ya se sabe que los profesores muchas veces exageramos las dificultades y nos quejamos del bajo nivel de los alumnos, pero en este caso es real. Los primeros cien niños y niñas que pueblan nuestra recién inaugurada escuela en Giasnogor traen un más que pobre bagaje académico. Vienen de las plantaciones de té o del vecino mercado, han tenido una enseñanza primaria llena de carencias (valga la redundancia). Su nivel de lectura y escritura, como decía al principio citando a los profesores, es dos o tres años inferior a lo que debería ser. Y, gracias a Dios, después de dos meses, no hemos tenido más que tres casos de abandono escolar (en otras escuelas es de hasta el 75%). Pero también me gustaría ponerme dentro de la piel de estos niños y niñas… Para ellos no es fácil venir a la escuela; en la foto ves sólo alguno de los obstáculos topográficos que deben pasar cada día para venir. Pero hay más obstáculos: carecen del más mínimo estímulo intelectual por parte de sus familias, viven en casas sin electricidad, sin agua, sin muebles. Y aún así, poco a poco, estamos intentando convencerles de que pueden hacerlo, de que pueden llegar al final de sus estudios, de que no son menos que los demás niños y niñas de su edad en otras partes de Bangladesh y del mundo. An important part of our work for the promotion of children's rights in tea plantations is to go out and visit the families of the kids. In the last two days, divided into groups of two or three, the teachers have visited 25 families in their homes. In the coming weeks we will visit the hundred families that now form our great family at the service of children. We are interested in their family situation, we collect data of interest for the education of our boys and girls, know your house inside and outside, parents, siblings and grandparents. All without exception welcome us with open arms and an extraordinary hospitality. They are also extremely collaborative and grateful. We establish with them a relationship of friendship that aims to improve the quality of the education that we will offer to the children in the school. This is our "outreach" program, that is, "going beyond", beyond a school closed in itself that is only concerned with transmitting knowledge.</div>

Una parte importante de nuestro trabajo por la promoción de los derechos de los niños en las plantaciones de té es salir a visitar y conocer a las familias de los chavales. En los dos últimos días, divididos en grupos de dos o tres, los profesores hemos visitado en sus casas a 25 familias. En las próximas semanas visitaremos a las cien familias que desde ahora forman nuestra gran familia al servicio de los niños. Nos interesamos por su situación familiar, recolectamos datos de interés para la educación de los chicos y chicas, conocemos su casa por dentro y por fuera, a los padres, hermanos y abuelos. Todos sin excepción nos reciben con los brazos abiertos y con una hospitalidad extraordinaria. Además se muestran colaborativos y agradecidos. Establecemos con ellos una relación de amistad que tiene como objetivo mejorar la calidad de la educación que ofreceremos a los niños en la escuela. En inglés se llama “outreach”, es decir, “ir más allá”, más allá de una escuela cerrada en sí misma que sólo se preocupa de transmitir conocimientos.</div>

We just opened our high school in Giasnogor 3 days ago. It has been the result of a long way of conception, preparation, fundraising, construction, recruitment of teachers and students, teachers training, etc. Now begins a new stage, the concrete realization of the educational project with the boys and girls from the tea plantations. And these days we have had the presence of Brother Emili Turú, Superior General of the Marist Brothers, who has come to celebrate the Jubilee of 200 years since the birth of our Institute with a "New Beginning". Before leaving Bangladesh, Br. Emili has left us some meaningful words. He has told us that he likes our project because it is a <b>CLEAR PROPOSAL </b>that bets on the <b>intercultural</b> (in our school coexist Bengali students and teachers, Mandi, Urao, Karia, Tripura, Kashia, etc.), <b>interreligious </b>(Muslims, Hindus, Christians) in an <b>intercongregational ecclesial work </b>(collaboration Marist Brothers, Marist Missionary Sisters, Holy Cross religious). As he wrote in one of his Facebook posts, captioning a group photo of the first teachers of our school: <i>"First Marist teachers in Bangladesh: Christians, Muslims, Hindus <b>for a better world.</b>"</i></div>

Acabamos de abrir la escuela secundaria en Giasnogor hace 3 días. Ha sido la culminación de un largo camino de concepción, preparación, recaudación de fondos, construcción, reclutamiento de profesores y alumnos, formación de profesores, etc. Ahora empieza una nueva etapa, la realización concreta del proyecto educativo con los chicos y chicas de las plantaciones de té. Pero estos días hemos contado con la presencia del Hermano Emili Turú, Superior General de los Hermanos Maristas, que ha venido a celebrar el Jubileo de 200 años desde el nacimiento de nuestro Instituto con un “Nuevo Comienzo”. Antes de dejar Bangladesh, el H. Emili nos ha dejado unas palabras llenas de sentido para nosotros. Nos ha dicho que le gusta nuestro proyecto porque es una <b>CLARA PROPUESTA </b>que apuesta por lo <b>intercultural </b>(en nuestra escuela conviven alumnos y profesores bengalíes, mandi, urao, karia, tripura, kashia, etc), lo <b>interreligioso</b> (musulmanes, hindúes, cristianos) y el <b>trabajo eclesial intercongregacional </b>(colaboración Hermanos Maristas, Hermanas Misioneras Maristas, religiosos Holy Cross). Como ha dejado escrito en uno de sus posts en Facebook glosando una foto del grupo de los primeros profesores de nuestra escuela: “<i>Primeros profesores maristas en Bangladesh: cristianos, musulmanes, hindúes <b>por un mundo mejor.</b></i>”</div>

Four or five years ago the Marist Brothers had a dream. In this dream many children from the tea gardens of Bangladesh could seat in a school bench and have books, uniforms, good teachers. Today, 2 January 2017, two hundred years after Marcellin Champagnat dreamt of us, we have been able to make our dream real. Today, 15th August 2016, our dreams started becoming real. We have the joy of blessing the Hostel for Girls with the presence of Bishop Bejoy D'Cruze. Too many cases are already going on. Children like the one in the photo with rashes and sores, sometimes resistant to the treatment given by the nurse. We treat then with ointments and antibiotics, even with some leaves with medicinal properties which are very common here; and yet children continue to suffer from these infections. We will keep trying even though it is difficult in the monsoon with enormous humidity and very high temperatures.</div>

Ya van muchos casos. Niños como el de la foto con erupciones y llagas, a veces resistentes al tratamiento que la enfermera les da. Se les trata con pomadas y antibióticos, incluso con unas hojas con propiedades medicinales que es muy común aquí; y sin embargo los niños siguen sufriendo estas infecciones. Seguiremos intentándolo aunque es difícil en pleno monzón con una humedad enorme y unas temperaturas muy altas. </div>
