Closing speech at the Workshop for Child Protection in Catholic Institutions. Alocución de clausura del Seminario sobre Protección de los niños en Instituciones Católicas

Dhaka, 11-15 July 2015

Dear Friends, Five days ago, when we started this workshop on Child Protection in Catholic Institutions, I said that “Children are our most precious gift. Children are God’s gift”. During these five days we have been reflecting on the best way to protect them, to educate them, to help them grow and become good citizens, true images of God.

You have in front of you 50 people; among us there are Priests, Sisters, Brothers, Headmistresses, teachers, hostel-in-charge, people working with disabled children, people working with street children, volunteers, parents. We come from seven dioceses and twelve different religious congregations. We are like a small representation of the whole Church in Bangladesh.

We have heard the voice of experts:
 Mr. Chondon Gomez, from World Vision, gave us an overview of the situation of children in Bangladesh
Fr. Albert Rozario, offered us the legal framework for Child Protection in this country
Delegates from BLAST spoke about Corporal Punishment issues
Representatives from Caritas (Mr. Montu Palma and Miss Juliet Lipica) and from Poto Shishu Sheba Shongoton (Sojid and Rebecca) held a round table on Child Protection Policy.
And we have been working hard to get the essentials in order to elaborate a Child Protection Policy in our Institutions. Methodology has been active and creative. Participation was excellent.

 As Brother Cesar Henriquez has put it many times during the workshop “All long trips start with a first step”. Well, this is the first step. We hope many others will follow in order to make the Church a safe and secure home for our children.

I want to thank you, Archbishop George Kocherry, Vatican Nuncio to Bangladesh. Your presence among us shows clearly the concern of Pope Francis for Children’s Rights.
I want to thank the Catholic Bishops Conference of Bangladesh for helping us and entrusting us with this beautiful and meaningful task.
I also want to thank all of you, participants in this workshop, for your presence, for your love and care for the children, for your participation, for being so proactive, and for your kindness and patience with the broken bangla of the organizers.
I want to thank especially Brother Cesar Henriquez for sharing with us his international experience working on Children’s Rights and for his excellent work during these days.

The Marist Brothers founder, St. Marcellin Champagnat, used to say that “to educate a child, first you must love him”. It is true; there is no education without love. Elaborating a Child Protection Policy is a proof of our love for the children that parents send to our schools, hostels, orphanages, youth centers and other institutions.

Queridos amigos, Cinco días atrás, cuando comenzamos este taller sobre protección de menores en instituciones católicas, dije que "los niños son nuestro más preciado regalo. Los niños son un regalo de Dios". Durante estos cinco días hemos estado reflexionando sobre la mejor manera de protegerlos, educarlos, ayudarles a crecer y convertirse en buenos ciudadanos, verdaderas imágenes de Dios.

Sr. Nuncio, tiene ante usted 50 personas; entre nosotros hay sacerdotes, hermanas, hermanos, directoras de escuela, docentes, directores de internados, personas que trabajan con niños con discapacidades, personas trabajando con niños de la calle, voluntarios, padres. Venimos de seis diócesis y doce diferentes congregaciones religiosas. Somos como una pequeña representación de la Iglesia en Bangladesh.

Hemos escuchado la voz de los expertos:
El Sr. Chondon Gomez, de World Vision, nos dio un resumen de la situación de los niños en Bangladesh
El P. Albert Rozario, nos ofreció el marco jurídico para la protección de los niños en este país
Delegados de BLAST hablaron sobre el castigo corporal
Representantes de Caritas (Sr. Montu Palma y Miss Juliet Lipica) y de Poto Shishu Saba Shongoton (Sojid y Rebecca) celebraron una mesa redonda sobre política de protección de niño.

Y luego hemos estado trabajando duro para conseguir lo esencial para elaborar una política de protección del niño en nuestras instituciones. La metodología ha sido activa y creativa. La participación, excelente.

Como el hermano Cesar Henriquez ha dicho muchas veces durante el taller "todos los viajes largos comienzan con un primer paso". Pues bien, éste ha sido nuestro primer paso. Esperamos que muchos otros le sigan con el fin de hacer de la Iglesia un hogar sano y seguro para nuestros niños.

Quiero darle las gracias, Monseñor George Kocherry, Nuncio del Vaticano en Bangladesh. Su presencia entre nosotros demuestra claramente la preocupación del Papa Francisco por los derechos de los niños. Quiero agradecer a la Conferencia Episcopal de Bangladesh por su ayuda y por confiarnos esta tarea hermosa y significativa. También quiero darles las gracias a todos ustedes, participantes en este taller, por su presencia, su amor y cuidado por los niños, por su participación, por ser tan proactivo y por su amabilidad y paciencia con el Bangla “aproximativo” de los organizadores. Quiero agradecer especialmente al hermano Cesar Henriquez por compartir con nosotros su experiencia internacional trabajando en los derechos del niño y por su excelente trabajo durante estos días. El fundador de los Hermanos Maristas, S. Marcelino Champagnat, solía decir que "para educar a un niño, primero tienes que amarlo". Es cierto; no hay educación sin amor. La elaboración de una política de protección del menor es una prueba de nuestro amor por los niños que los padres envían a nuestras escuelas, albergues, orfanatos, centros juveniles y otras instituciones. Singing in the rain. Cantando bajo la lluvia

As every year, the rain has made its appearance in Bangladesh. It is monsoon season. Here in the area of Moulovibazar we will have approximately 200 days of rain as every year. And water, which is a blessing of God for the Earth and those who live on it, is also an obstacle to the construction’s work. In the photos and video you can see the state in which the roads around and on our land are, and the tremendous efforts of the builders to carry the mixer from one place to another. Despite everything, they work with an excellent spirit. We often have to remind ourselves that all these labors have a wonderful goal for which every single effort is worth: one day, and there is not long to, dozens of children will run around these courtyards and will study under these roofs; one day, and there is not long to, lots of children will populate this place with their laughter and joy; one day, and there is not long to, lots of children will learn things that will take them and their families out of their misery.

Como cada año, la lluvia ha hecho aparición en Bangladesh. Es época de monzón. Aquí en la zona de Moulovibazar vamos a tener 200 días de lluvia aproximadamente, como cada año. Y el agua, que una bendición de Dios para la tierra y quienes viven de ella, es también un obstáculo para la construcción. En las fotos y el vídeo puedes ver el estado en que se ponen los caminos alrededor y en nuestra finca, y los esfuerzos ímprobos de los albañiles para llevar de un sitio a otro la hormigonera. A pesar de todo, trabajan con un espíritu excelente. Muchas veces tenemos que recordarnos que toda esta faena tiene un objetivo maravilloso por el que valen la pena todos los esfuerzos: un día, y ya falta menos, montones de niños y niñas corretearán por estos patios y estudiarán bajo estos techos; un día, y ya falta menos, montones de niños y niñas poblarán este lugar de risas y alborozo; un día, y ya falta menos, montones de niños y niñas aprenderán aquí cosas que les sacarán a ellos y a sus familias de la miseria.

Everything upside down. Ni títere con cabeza

The last storm just turned everything turned upside down at our place in Gyasnogor. At this time of year storms are common thing in Bangladesh, sometimes real cyclones. This time it was our turn and all those who live in this area. Uprooted trees and countless broken branches have fallen over houses and power lines. We have lost nearly 70 trees. One, fortunately small, fell on top of our house, but some of our neighbors, whose houses are more fragile than ours, suffered much more than us. The poor are always the looser in these situations. The good news is that there has been no personal damages and that at least we have firewood for a while...

Ni títere con cabeza ha dejado la última tormenta que nos ha pasado por encima en Gyasnogor. En esta época del año se producen siempre en Bangladesh fuertes tormentas, a veces ciclones. Esta vez nos ha tocado a nosotros y a todos los que viven en esta zona. Árboles arrancados de cuajo e incontables ramas rotas que han caído encima de las casas y de la línea eléctrica. Casi 70 árboles hemos perdido. Un árbol, afortunadamente pequeño, cayó encima de nuestra casa, pero mucho más sufrieron algunos de nuestros vecinos cuyas casas son más frágiles que la nuestra. Los más pobres siempre llevan las de perder en estos casos. Nos queda el consuelo de que no ha habido daños personales y que al menos tenemos leña para rato…

To build a house is much more than just putting bricks. Construir una casa es más que poner ladrillos

To build a house is much more than just putting bricks. You dream of it, design it, discuss it, and then you see it grow like if it was a daughter. In the end you still need to personalize it, fill it with colors, details, life. We, Brothers, just finished building a house in Gyasnogor, Bangladesh, beside the school which is also under construction. During the 6 months building time, I have thought thousands of times of this verse from the Psalms, “If the Lord doesn’t build the house, in vain the laborers work.” And now that is completed and that we have come to live in, a lot of feelings come from the bottom of my heart. Building a house we prove that we love our mission in Bangladesh because when you build a house you intend to stay in it. Last seven years we were renting apartments and at any moment we could leave since nothing was tying us to this country, except maybe for the friendly relationships we have established. Not anymore. Now we have committed ourselves with this country and its people, especially the workers in the tea gardens next door to which we have built our nest. And I want from this post to thank Aid to the Church in Need that has financed 100% the works; without them nothing of this would be possible.

Construir una casa es más que poner ladrillos. La sueñas, la diseñas, la comentas, y luego la ves crecer cada día, como si fuera una hija. Y al final todavía hay que personalizarla, darle colores, detalles, vida. Los Hermanos acabamos de construir una casa en Gyasnogor, Bangladesh, al ladito de la futura escuela, también en construcción. Durante los 6 meses que ha durado la construcción me ha venido mil veces a la cabeza el versículo del salmo que dice: “Si el Señor no construye la casa, en vano trabajan los albañiles”. Y ahora que está terminada y que hemos venido a habitarla, otro montón de sentimientos me vienen desde muy dentro. Construyendo una casa hemos dado prueba de que amamos nuestra misión en Bangladesh porque cuando uno tiene una casa es porque se quiere quedar en ella. Durante los siete años que hemos estado viviendo de alquiler, en cualquier momento nos hubiéramos podido ir, no teníamos nada que nos atara a esta tierra salvo quizá las amistades que hemos ido tejiendo. Ahora ya no. Ahora nos hemos comprometido seriamente con este país y sus gentes, especialmente los trabajadores de las plantaciones de té en cuyo corazón hemos edificado nuestro hogar. Y quiero desde aquí dar las gracias a Ayuda a la Iglesia Necesitada, que nos la ha financiado al 100%; sin ellos nada de esto hubiera sido posible.

Current state of works. Estado actual de las obras. Moulovibazar Project

Today we want to offer an overall view of the current state of the works in Gyasnogor (Moulovibazar). With the help of numerous sponsors we are constructing three buildings simultaneously:

1. The Brothers House, almost completed thanks to the contribution of Aid to the Church in Need

2. The Boarding for girls, foundations completed, is currently a jungle of columns of iron and bamboo waiting for the cement to cover the ground floor. All of this is done with the help of Manos Unidas and Marist Solidarity Australia

3. The proper High School, whose works just started. We are at the level of excavation and laying foundations. Misean Cara, FMSI and Kindermissionswerk are helping us in this part of the project

Many thanks to all those who daily are interested in this project that will promote education of the sons and daughters of the tea plantations workers in the Moulovibazar - Sreemongol area. And many thanks to those who contribute with their wishes, their prayers and their money for this dream to become real.

Hoy queremos ofrecerles una vista de conjunto del estado actual de las obras en Gyasnogor (Moulovibazar). Con la ayuda de numerosos sponsors estamos construyendo tres edificios simultáneamente:

 1. La casa de los Hermanos, ya casi terminada gracias a la contribución de Ayuda a la Iglesia Necesitada

2. El internado para chicas, cimientos terminados, actualmente es una jungla de columnas de hierro y bambú a la espera de echar el cemento que cubra la planta baja. Todo ello hecho con la ayuda de Manos Unidas y Marist Solidarity Australia

3. La escuela secundaria, cuyos trabajos acabamos de empezar. Estamos a nivel de excavar y echar los cimientos. Misean Cara, FMSI y Kindermissionswerk nos están ayudando en esta parte del proyecto

Muchas gracias a todos los que se interesan a diario por este proyecto que intentará promover los niveles educativos de los hijos e hijas de los trabajadores de las plantaciones de té en la zona de Moulovibazar y Sreemongol. Refuerzos. Reinforcements

Our community is being enriched little by little. A couple of weeks ago, we have received reinforcements. Brother Virgilio Bwalya is now a member of our community. During the school’s construction works he will teach English to the children at the parrochial school in Sreemongol, as well as to the students of the small Caritas technical school. Welcome, Virgilio. In the picture we took with a family in the village of Phulchora, he is the second from the right. As you can see, our community cannot be more international: three Brothers from three different continents!

Nuestra comunidad se enriquece. Desde hace un par de semanas, hemos recibido refuerzos. Se trata del Hermano Virgilio Bwalya, que es desde ahora un miembro más de nuestra comunidad. Mientras duren los trabajos de construcción se va a encargar de dar clases de inglés a los chavales de la escuela parroquial en Srimongol, así como a los alumnos y alumnas de la pequeña escuela de artes y oficios de Caritas. Bienvenido, Virgilio. En la foto que tomamos junto con una familia del poblado de Phulchora, es el segundo por la derecha. Como puede verse, nuestra comunidad no puede ser más internacional: ¡Tres Hermanos de tres continentes diferentes!

Today we would like to be grateful. It’s said that one good turn deserves another, and we believe that it’s time for us to thank in this blog the many financial aids that are coming to us, some small, others big. Many of the contributions correspond to private donors (a certain number of whom don’t want to be named), others are institutions, agencies and NGOs. To all, our gratitude, our prayer. Our journey and experiences are teaching us the effort required to obtain funds in the current international context of financial crisis; therefore we appreciate even more the help we have received and that still to come. Dicen que es de bien nacidos ser agradecidos, y creemos que es hora de que en este blog nos hagamos eco de las muchas ayudas financieras que nos están llegando, unas pequeñas, otras grandes.
