Foundations and columns. Cimientos y columnas

Our first trenches, our first bricks, the first columns of our school for the tea gardens workers’ children are already real thanks to the effort and the help of many of you. At the moment it is only the boundary, but we hope that very soon we will be laying the foundations of the school and the boarding school. But we don’t forget that the real columns of all this are the faith of the many people helping us to build it with their support, their prayers and their money. And we don’t forget that the real foundations are in our faith that this is good and necessary to dignify a group of young people to whom the sacred right to an education is being denied.

There’s nothing to gain by using the cane. No se gana nada a palos (Against the corporal punishment. Contra el castigo corporal)

Transcription of an article published in the Bangladeshi online newspaper "New Age" about corporal punishment and its significance in the environment of violence prevailing in the country.

There’s an enormous violence undercurrent in Bangladesh, you will have noticed. We see its ugly face during hartals, especially. We read about the mindless beatings and killings in the blood-filled streets and our TV screen are crammed with public transport, shops, houses, even schools ablaze and shameless damage to private and public property. It is as if causing willful damage and terrorizing innocent people is a perk of the process and fun to be had by the mindless participants and most probably it is. Such deplorable scenes are likely to continue long into the future, if the problem isn’t addressed soon. In some schools a fresh batch of terrorists are being prepared right now. Any school that engages in the use of corporal punishment is a breeding ground for terrorists. Some of the ‘teachers’ who ‘teach’ at these schools are themselves terrorists. The messages they deliver via the cane, clenched fists and open hands are messages of terrorism, oppression and fear. While the children are perhaps a decade or two away from making throwing their first bomb into an overcrowded public bus; corporal punishment teaches them that violence is good... that violence is the solution to all problems.

Dust on the road

Back home after a visit to the plantation of Horinchora, near Sreemangal, in the jeep of the parish, plying the dusty roads at this time of the year, we have passed by your side when you also went back home after working on the tea garden. Both of us return home: but I go by car and you walk, I wear shoes and you're going barefoot, a bed with mattress awaits me but you will only find a bare wood table, dinner-hot with rice and fish is waiting for me but you will have only rice, in my house there is electricity and in yours not. In addition, passing by your side we have covered you with dust and you had to protect your face with your gamsa. Forgive me for having so many things "from birth", having done anything to deserve it. Forgive me because you don't have anything like that having done anything to deserve it. I hope that your children can live better than you; I hope that they can go to a decent school and have a future better than your present.

Jahir and Juhaer. The watchmen. Los vigilantes

These two men are Jahir and Juhaer. They are the first two employees of our project in Moulovibazar. They are our watchmen; one during day time and the other at night. They are committed to be there and ensure that everything in the plot is in order, that nobody cut our trees or take sand from the river, or makes fire... Today they have received their first pay for the first month work for us. I have told them to take care of this land as if it were their own. I hope that in a not-too-distant future Jahir and Juhaer will have many coworkers: teachers, educators, builders, cooks, that will help us realize our dream of creating an educational space for the tea garden workers’ children. Inch Allah.

A suggestion

Christmas is coming and perhaps you've thought to give a small portion of your expenses and gifts to those whose Christmas absolutely lacks any "extra" apart from the midnight mass. If so, I invite you to share with the poor people in the tea plantations of Bangladesh, by clicking on one of the buttons DONACIONES or DONATE on the menu bar of this blog. God will pay you a hundredfold of what you do for them, the poorest and the smallest. Thank you.
Gracias.
